Throttling Is Less Terrifying Than Fire … Technically
Among those pointing fingers at NVIDIA over melting power cables for the RTX 4090 was AMD, whom are finding themselves in a somewhat similar situation. While the power cables for the RTX 4090 were melting because users didn’t follow the vague instructions to not bend the cables past a certain point in their cases, the same cannot be said for the thermal issues reported for AMD’s reference RX 7900 XTX cards.
To be clear, no issues have been reported with third party RX 7900 XTX cards, only with the reference cards provided by AMD. Igor’s Lab was testing one of those cards and found the hotspot would reach 110C, which is rather higher than would be desired. So far the extreme heat seems to only cause throttling of the card, no reports of melting have been received but it is still somewhat concerning.
You can check out the original report at Igor’s Lab, where the trouble with the vapour chamber in the RX 7900 XTX was first discovered. If you managed to obtain one of the reference AMD RX 7900 XTX cards, AMD offers a refund or an exchange for a working card, depending on your preference.
