Overclocking The RTX 4090 Founders Edition

They’ve Hung The 12VHPWR Adapter With Care

The FPS Review wanted to see just how much they could get out of their RTX 4090 Founders Edition, and to do so carefully set it up so that increasing the power shouldn’t result in the magic smoke escaping.  For this experiment they used EVGA’s Precision X1 overclocking software, on a Ryzen 9 7900X and ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E paired with DDR5-6000.  A Seasonic Prime 1300W was used to feed the system, so the power is there for the RTX 4090.

To start they bumped the Power Target to 133% and the fans to 100% before starting, as this card is a beast at normal frequencies.  With that extra juice they managed to raise the GPU clock by 220MHz and the memory by a decent 1.25GHz.  They could get it to boot with an extra 270MHz GPU and 1.75GHz memory, but the system crashed if they tried to benchmark it.

That boost did improve performance noticeably on most games, but also raised total board power to 490W!  This suggests to them that some third party cards can do better and might even be stable at 500W, at least for a while.
