Discretion Is Overrated?
The launch of socketed CPUs is always more exciting than the launch of embedded CPUs, but you shouldn’t completely neglect those chips as they will soon be powering small displays everywhere you look. AMD have revealed the details of their eight new Ryzen Embedded V3000 series chips, which include a nice surprise in the form of DDR5 support. The new Zen 3 based chips will also be PCIe 4.0 compliant, which should increase the capabilities of the products which contain them.
There are eight SKUs ranging from the V3C14 with four cores and eight threads sporting a base clock of 2.3 GHz and a boost of 3.8 GHz, running at 10-25W through to the V3C48 with eight cores, 16 threads with frequencies of 3.3 GHz and 3.8 GHz and a TDP ranging from 35 to 54W. That is quite different from the desktop chips, and one would expect them to run significantly cooler as well.
It is interesting to see Zen 3 paired with DDR5, as we have never seen that before. This could indicate that the Zen 3 core still has some sort of future, even though it lacks some of the new Zen 4 features.
